Are You Eating Burnt Toast?
A few years back the actress Teri Hatcher wrote a book called Burnt Toast and Other Philosophies of Life, basically saying that as moms we will eat the burnt toast and give the better slices to everyone else. We put everyone’s needs before our own. I have always loved that analogy because as a mom myself it hit home. Now I am not saying that there isn’t a time and place to put others before you, but it should not be the norm. We want to give our kids everything including the good toast and our time and love and affection, I could go on but you see what I am saying. What if by eating the burnt toast, we lose sight of who we are as a person and forget what is important to us and our lives.
A wise friend of mine once said to me, “Imagine that when you were born you were given a house. You could do anything you wanted to the house, decorate it, furnish it but you could never move. How would you treat that house? Would you fill it with unnecessary possessions, clogging all the rooms so you couldn’t move? Would you let the roof get a leak and never fix it so the house got moldy?”
My belief is that your answer is no that you would take care of the house knowing that this was the only house you would ever have.
Now think of this house like it was your one body, your one life – How would you treat it?
Would you make sure the foundation was strong by giving it nourishing food, love, kindness, strength and self-care? Would you look for the cracks in the walls and try to fix them so that you stayed strong? Would you look for stressors in the beams and make sure they had extra support?
Think about it and how you would really answer. We are all so busy being busy that taking care of ourselves falls to the bottom of our to-do list. Yes we have a lot of demands on our time and in this digital age we are much more accessible 24/7 but when do we stop to breathe? When do we take a pause and do what is best for ourselves. Maybe it’s taking 5 minutes uninterrupted to enjoy our favorite cup of tea or coffee in the morning or listening to a favorite song that brings us joy.
SO I ask you – Are you always eating Burnt Toast? If you are, what is one thing that you can do today to make your foundation stronger? You don’t build a house in one day and so this will be a journey but believing that you are worth it is the first step. Remember that you have One Life, One Body – let’s take care of it.
